What is the Peter Pan Op Shop?
Hosted by the Peter Pan Committee, a fundraising auxiliary of Barnardos Australia, the Peter Pan Op Shop is a biannual event that sees donations of clothing from everyday Aussies and designer brands come together for a three-day fashion fundraiser.
Operating for over 80 years, the event dates back to World War ll when clothes rationing was introduced. Now it is a highly respected and recognisable charity fundraiser – especially for fashion enthusiasts who are eager to get a bargain. Many of the items on offer are pre-loved favourites, vintage pieces, surplus of designer goods, or end-of-season stock from local retailers. Proceeds raised during the event help fund Barnardos Australia programs.
How does the Australian Mutuals Foundation get involved?
As the top corporate partner of Barnardos Australia, the Australian Mutuals Foundation is proud to continue our support of Barnardos by helping to provide volunteers to help run their fundraising and community events.
Volunteers play a vital role in the running of the Peter Pan Op Shop event and help to ensure an array of tasks are actioned so that the event can operate successfully.
At this year’s winter event, volunteers on behalf of the Australian Mutuals Foundation worked busily to help set up the sale – sorting and pricing stock, whilst others helped to assist customers on the search for a great deal.
Some of our volunteers share their experience below:
"My overall experience was a great day and to be able to volunteer and to witness the need for organisations to help and support the community was a privilege and to recycle great clothes- new and used. I will definitely volunteer to do this again." - Josette Loje
“I attended on the first day and there was a lineup of women waiting to enter the pop-up shop – it was exciting when those doors opened! I was tasked with helping the shoppers and asking about their experience – I found most of the ladies were returning customers and they were thrilled the event still exists! I thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thank you.” - Rebecca Viney
“Supporting the Peter Pan Op Shop event was a wonderful experience that I would gladly participate in again. Barnardos was genuinely appreciative of our efforts, and it was heartening to see so many volunteers coming together to help. The event raised must needed funds to support Australian children in need and provided a fantastic opportunity to meet and connect with many amazing people.” – Peter Nguyen
“It was an incredibly rewarding experience. It was a really well-run event, and the shop was filled with a wide variety donated items ranging from designer clothing to simple accessories. The environment is busy and lively, with customers and volunteers interacting in a positive and uplifting atmosphere. As a volunteer, I was involved in various tasks such as sorting, arranging merchandise, assisting customers, and maintaining the overall tidiness of the shop. Each task was clearly explained, and I received excellent guidance and support. Volunteering at Peter Pan Op Shop was more than just a chance to give back to the community; I developed a deeper understanding of the importance of community support and sustainability. Thank you AMF for providing this volunteering opportunities for the mutual sector.” - Adeline Siew
